  • Workers Compensation in the Aviation Industry

Workers Compensation for professional pilots and aviation related employees is a unique niche. You may have heard that some insurance companies won’t write the coverage at all – or at the very least, will exclude any flying crew from a corporation’s Workers Compensation policy.

Not to worry – there are several strong insurance companies that have served the aviation industry for years, and some new innovative companies have added programs that provide a clear path to the coverage you need.

Whether you’re a corporate flight department, FBO, Flight School, Charter Operator, or specialize in Props, Engine Repair, Avionics, or Repainting and Refinishing – there is a program available for you.

Here’s a rundown of the current industry leaders:

AIG Aviation – provides a full range of coverage for all types of aviation-related exposures utilizing guaranteed cost, large deductible and retrospective rating plans.

Beacon Aviation Insurance Services – offers a quality dividend program available for NATA members, with annual dividends tied to your individual loss experience. Also known for their BizJet program covering both aviation and non-aviation employees for businesses that own or operate corporate aircraft. No more split risks!

Global Aerospace – available for corporate flight departments, particularly when writing coverage for the aircraft liability and hull.

Phoenix Aviation – offers to NBAA members an excellent dividend program, based on the group’s loss experience. Introduced in 2009, this program reported a 17.5% percent return in 2013.

QBE Underwriters – current IFBOA members can participate in a group program which pools losses and gives all insureds potential to earn a Good Experience Return.

Starr Aviation – known for finding creative solutions for both small and middle market businesses, Starr also offers one of the most comprehensive programs to businesses with employees working abroad.

USAIG – launched their new AeroComp program in 2013, focusing on operational safety and excellence. With a long history of strength in aviation, USAIG offers a broad range of programs including a high deductible for larger policyholders who have a demonstrated ability to retain a portion of each loss.

Occasionally it’s necessary to find coverage with your current state’s fund, which can help build a good experience rating as your business grows. L.L. Johns can help guide you through that process and when the timing is right, suggest moving to a private insurer.

It has been our privilege to pursue the best programs and guide you toward the one that is uniquely suited to your needs. We keep our ear to the ground to keep up with the most current coverage options – so that you don’t have to!
